Aberaeron
The picturesque seaside town of Aberaeron is situated on the
Ceredigion coastline of West Wales between the towns of Cardigan and
Aberystwyth. Renowned for its colourful rows of Regency style houses,
bustling quayside and delicious honey ice cream, Aberaeron attracts visitors near
and far all year round.
The colourful character cottages that give Aberaeron its Georgian charm are the work of Rev. Alban Thomas-Jones Gwynne and
architect Edward Haycock, who designed and built the town in 1805. During the 19th century Aberaeron prospered as a thriving
port, with ship building, herring fisheries, and the export of raw materials
such as coal making up its main industries. Today
the harbour continues to supply freshly caught fish and is a popular spot for
families wanting to indulge in spot of crabbing.
For those planning holidays in the Cardigan Bay area, there are many guest
houses and hotels in Aberaeron to choose from. Located in perhaps the most
enviable position, is the Harbour Master hotel, restaurant and bar, overlooking
Aberaeron’s harbour and south beach. Located next door to the Harbour Master
Hotel is the Tourist Information Centre.
During the summer months, Aberaeron hosts a calendar of events such as the Festival of Welsh Ponies
and Cobs, an action-packed day of equestrian demonstrations and exhibitions, and the Cardigan Bay Seafood Festival, offering food lovers a taste the best of local seafood, fish and
other produce.
Situated just a couple of miles from Aberaeron along the
Aeron valley is Llanerchaeron, an 18th century gentry estate,
designed and built by the architect John Nash. Now owned by the National Trust,
the residence, pleasure grounds and ornamental lake are open to visitors to
explore.
Visitors to Aberaeron are well catered for by the excellent selection
of cafés, restaurants, and pubs providing refreshment, with local specialities
including in home-baked cakes, honey ice cream and fresh seafood. Aberaeron’s
main streets offer an interesting range of independent shops for visitors to
browse, whilst to the south of the town the Aberaeron Craft Centre houses a
wide range of locally made crafts and gifts. For younger visitors, a large
playing field and children’s playground can be found in Alban Square in the
centre of the town.
Parking in Aberaeron is available in the pay and display car
parks on Beach Parade in front of South Beach, Heol Y Farchnad by the quayside,
and Lower Regent Street. Public conveniences are located near the car parks on
Beach Parade and Lower Regent Street (north beach end), and on Castle Lane and
Pen Cei.
